What It Means: Total Alkalinity (TA) measures the water’s ability to resist changes in pH. Think of it as a buffer—helping to prevent rapid pH fluctuations (also known as “pH bounce”). Balanced TA keeps water more stable and protects both swimmers and surfaces.
Ideal Range: 80–120 ppm
If Total Alkalinity Is Too Low: Low TA causes erratic pH, corrosion, and discomfort. Raise it with Alkalinity Control, made with 100% sodium bicarbonate. This fast-dissolving granule is ideal for quickly restoring a healthy balance. Follow package instructions based on pool size, distribute evenly, and retest after 2–3 hours of circulation.
If Total Alkalinity Is Too High: Excess TA can cause cloudy water and scale formation. Lower TA gradually with Muriatic Acid, dosing in stages and retesting between treatments. Be mindful—adjusting TA may also lower your pH, so monitor both closely.
Best Practices:
Balance Total Alkalinity before adjusting pH.
Test TA weekly, or more often during new pool startup or major chemical changes.
Circulate water thoroughly after adding any balancing chemicals.
Chlor-Dash Recommends:
Alkalinity Control to raise Total Alkalinity
Muriatic Acid to lower Total Alkalinity
